KUNSTRAUM KESSELHAUS, BAMBERG
KUNSTVEREIN BAMBERG x AOA;87

Observe the Distance, Look Within Yourself is a site-specific installation conceived for the spaces of the Kunstraum Kesselhaus. The work takes the form of a suspended monolithic volume composed of four curtains made of plastic tiles. Across each surface, overlapping texts unfold through combinations of colour and multiple layers of reading, continuously oscillating between word and image, textual stimulus and abstract sign.

Visitors are invited to move around the structure, gradually assembling fragments of meaning while accepting that parts of the work remain hidden or indecipherable. The installation extends beyond what is visible: a portion of its structure descends into the void below, reaching the lower level of the building and remaining inaccessible to the public.

If the earlier curtains created by Numero Cromatico evoked the act of crossing a threshold, here the curtain takes on a new spatial role, recalling the presence of a totem. The work no longer invites trespassing, but instead calls for movement around it. The monolithic volume asserts itself as an autonomous presence, demanding a different kind of attention and engagement.

Observe the Distance, Look Within Yourself transforms the central void of the architecture into a presence. What is usually perceived as absence becomes occupied by a permeable volume, traversed by light and by the gaze, yet impossible to apprehend in its entirety. In this way, the installation enters into a direct dialogue with the Kunstraum Kesselhaus. The former heating plant still carries the memory of a place devoted to the concentration and distribution of energy, organised around a functional core. By inhabiting the building’s central void, the work symbolically reconfigures this legacy, replacing a technical centre with a linguistic and perceptual one, where language becomes material, environment, and shared experience.

In Observe the Distance, Look Within Yourself, the act of looking becomes an exercise in awareness. The distance evoked by the title is not merely physical: it is the distance between the visible and the invisible, the intelligible and the ambiguous, between what reveals itself and what remains beyond the limits of direct experience.

The exhibition is realized with the generous support of Sandschlössla Bamberg.

outdoor EXHIBITION an der Kesselhaus Flussseite:

10 Jahre Kunstraum Kesselhaus!
10 Jahre Ausstellungen: Kunstverein Bamberg, BBK Oberfranken, Architekturtreff Bamberg, u.A.
